This is why we’re hot

So yeah… I just got back to Eindhoven, after a crazy weekend filled to the top with warsow. CDC4 took place in wzzrd, Enschede and we had a small 8-player warsow competition. The whole signups were kinda shifty, with an initial count of 20, but entry fees paid before the deadline were only 3 or 4.
We were supposed to be starting our cup on Friday, but adminning was completely left to us as a community. Which has its upsides, but surely also downsides. What worked out nice is that the atmosphere of the warsow players and entourage was nice. What did not work out nice is the communication with the cup admin and server admins/shoutcasts/computer admins.
For me, the day started out pretty early on Friday. I woke up at 7:30am to be in Enschede at noon. But of course, if you’re supposed to be somewhere on time, you’re sure to be too late if you go by train. Because some train had a crash, I had to transfer a total of 3 times, with one transfer at Zutphen. My breakfast consisted of a banana and I really felt the need to eat something, so I had a semi-decent breakfast.

At wzzrd I met with h1o and Rikku and started to arrange some stuff. The entire Friday I spent doing 2 things. Getting computers and waiting for players. Waiting for players wasn’t that hard… it kinda went automatically. But to describe the pain of getting computers:
-marrk: “h1o, you know anything about the computers?”
-h1o: “go ask cash, he should know”
-marrk looks about 10 minutes for cash, finds him: “yo cash, h1o told me you could help me with computers?”
-cash: “I don’t know man, you should ask tosspot”
-marrk waits for tosspot to finish his sc: “yo, cash told me to ask you for computers”
-tosspot: “I think h1o is on it?”
-marrk: “nopz, he told me to find cash, cash told me to find you”
-tosspot: “oh, in that case go to the server admins, they should be able to help you”

Needless to say, I’ve walked a lot and met a lot of new people. But it resulted in nothing. At around 8 pm we decided together with tosspot and A_Spec that the games would be postponed until Saturday, so that they would be able to get computers for us.

Friday night
German pillz didn’t have a place to sleep. Nor did jannis. Scoobz was supposed to sleep at Rikku’s, but since he was the only one with a car, we forced him to take the one hour drive with pillz and marrk to ETR/marrk crib in Zwolle, while jannis and ETR went by train. Since we didn’t get any games, we decided to set up a small lan and play some games. All the while enjoying the padpork candy jannis brought.

Saturday
Anyways, we went to bed, woke up, decided to bring two CRT’s so we didn’t have to play on the TFT’s, drove to Enschede, stopped at McD’s for breakfast, and got to wzzrd. The first thing we noticed was the large picknick table, where we had 2 computers :) .

Really warsowish, we were the only one playing with old CRT screens, on a table that was definetely not part of the interior. The warsow server they were running was however .41. And he was to busy to untar .42 and overwrite them… Finally he managed to squeeze that job in, which of course resulted in a disconnection of the wswtv server. CDC admins weren’t really ready to give us the external IP, and tried to handle it with gamestv. Which worked out quite nicely, since we only had a couple of disconnects the first day and they were fixed quickly.
But even the first day, with not that high quality matches, A_Spec made a real effort to shoutcast games. It was great, sitting next to him, listening to his casts and annoying him with trivia about pillz weaponbinds among others.

Thank god I got kicked out of the cup quite early, which made it possible to idle IRC with the nick ‘CDC-reporter’ and spam channels getting people on wswTV and connected to the streams. It was fun. For me… We kept on gaming until late at night, at which point we loaded scoobz car again to head back home for a night’s rest. No games anymore, just some footage of pillz in boxers which will be online of course.

Sunday
Suday was the big day. Only two matches, finals and consolation final. It was hard work, the players didn’t get that much time to warmup, we had to fit tightly in the schedule for streamage and of course there were problems with wswtv. In a chaotic frenzy the external IP was passed to a couple of persons, which lead to different wswtv servers connecting and disconnecting throughout the conso finals. Didn’t work out that nicely, but after having soh-lokirulez on the phone for connecting his warsownews tv-server, it seemed to work out nice. Until all CDC upload got closed down for some apparent reason, which forced me to try and comment on the match over IRC. Feed me back on that plz ;) .

Anyways, it was great fun. We’ve seen quality games and even superb shoutcasts. A_Spec seemed to be one of the few non-warsow players that cared about the game and he’s done a top notch job. Some people were even interested in what game we were exactly playing and stuck around for a couple of minutes. I highly doubt there’s going to be a next CDC for warsow, but I think we as players had fun. Kinda bad that we ditched the ceremonies at the end, but hey, waiting for another 3 hours after playing/watching really intense games was just too much. Grats to scoobz, h1o and jannis. And of course thanks to A_Spec for the great shoutcasts.
