So I’ve been to Newcastle with the Mrs and it’s been fun. Took my 35mm as walkaround lens and shot away. I did learn how to level my horizons, which is nice. I do still need to learn how not to abuse my f1.8 and to limit ISO to 800, because 1600 is kind of … meh…

I just received my grade for the first of two papers I have to write before receiving my Master’s degree. It’s good and I enjoyed the research, so why not post it online?

The study is a wee bit too small to be submitted to a conference paper, but too large to be completely forgotten, so I’m posting it online. The study tried to study the occurrence of choice overload in a movie recommender system and whether or not diversifying the set of recommendations alleviates choice overload. The results were not really conclusive, but good enough to base a second study on. And enough questions rose to base a master thesis research on. So go ahead and read it if you want to.

I bought a new hard disk yesterday, and now I have the space again to work on my pictures without having to throw out other pictures.
So today I opened my lightroom again and whipped out some pictures. Long due, but now I’ll just post these pictures online. Volkswagen Beetles with flat tires are always worth photographing!

One picture, five crops

So I was reading this book, called The Photographer’s Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photo by Michael Freeman.
One of the chapters is about cropping. Often, pictures need to be cropped. When we’re shooting medium format pictures for example, or when our in camera composition just sucks horribly. One of the things done in the book is taking one picture and a number of crops from that same picture, that are all pictures in itself. So that’s what I tried to do in a similar fashion.
So the first one is the original, the other 4 are crops from it.

Early Birds on the first day of spring

Getting up early is worth it from time to time. When I woke up this morning to do the stuff I needed to do (mounting a shelve on the wall, doing some tax payment stuff and putting ads up for my beloved analog body and lenses), my lampshade was hanging nicely in the morning sun, so I decided to take a picture of it.
I guess it’s nice because of the timing and all, with today being the first day of spring. The spring sun coming through my window was nice to see.

The colors have given me hell. It took me about a minute to take the proper picture, but getting the colors correctly took me a buttload of time. I even tried it in black and white…

36 hours of Corbusier

Our editorial staff had a small teambuilding holidays in Marseille. It was pretty good but we did not do too much. The flight was 10 euros for a return flight, so we decided to go there. We stayed for 2 days and saw the neighborhood built by Marseille’s architect Le CorbusierÂ which was pretty awesome. A lot of concrete buildings with non-concrete shapes I guess. I don’t know too much about architecture, but I still took a number of pictures and pretended to be amazed.Â

For the rest we did typical French stuff, like eating bread with cheese, drinking wine and walking around. Marseille was a decent thing to do and our team is built again. Check out the picturesÂ if you want.
